Ages 10 to Adult The year is 1848……. Perhaps you are a farmer from New England, or a teacher from Alabama, or a freed slave from Virginia. No matter what your background, you are consumed with the prospect of an incredible opportunity: the chance to move West and start a new life. You have heard stories about people who have already traveled the Oregon Trail. Young and old, rich and poor, individuals and families -people from all walks of life -have been embarking upon this great journey. The reason? Free, fertile farmland for anyone brave enough to make the trip. And now you want to make the journey yourself! In the game, you arrive in Independence by yourself. You'll choose up to four people to be in your personal wagon. It's very important to choose people who have skills you think will be helpful along the trail and with whom you will enjoy traveling! You'll go on an adventure of a lifetime with several other wagons. You won't see them while you're moving, but you can talk to the people in them when you stop to rest. Game Features: * Outfitting your wagon: Think carefully about what you want to buy. * On the Trail -Keeping up Morale: Folks would get up at sunrise, eat breakfast, and head out on the trail. They would stop for a midday meal and then continue on until shortly before dark. In the game, these stops happen automatically; you won't see them. But it's a good idea to stop occasionally and take longer rests. That will give you a chance to improve your health and talk to your companions. * On the Trail -Pace, Rations, Supplies: If a thief comes in the night, be prepared! Or if you tip your wagon at a river crossing, it's a good idea to check your supplies! Anything can happen! * Hunting: Similar to hunting in real life. The type of gun you use and the amount of ammunition you have are based on your wagon's supplies. Take care not to run out of ammunition. It might be a long way to the next store! * Fishing: An expert angler like yourself can catch trout, catfish, salmon, bass, or walleye -depending on your location along the trail. * Gathering Plants: Make sure you know what you're eating! Some plants are going to be poisonous, you'll get sick and die if you eat them. (You can use your guide book for help) * Events: Packed with over 100 events that were likely to happen to people on the real trail. * Landmarks and Trading: Over 50 Landmarks -natural features, towns, forts, and trading posts. * Crossing Rivers: Near the end of their long, grueling trip pioneers were faced with a difficult decision: Should they take the Barlow Toll Road -a safe but time consuming trail -or should they raft down the Columbia River -a dangerous but speedy trip? You'll face the same decision yourself! With a little Luck and a lot of skill, you should make it to the Oregon City about five or six months after you leave Independence. (That's computer time not real time!) Your reward -the amount of land and type of house you get is based upon what happens along the trail. The most important factor is getting all your wagon party members to Oregon ALIVE!
